Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center
More than 2,000 years ago, the Apostle Paul lived in turbulent times of his own. Nevertheless, from a Roman prison cell, Paul encouraged his beloved Philippian community against fear, worry and doubt. He penned words of peace. While shackled to a cold wall, Paul wrote them a letter of joy and consolation. These words were delivered through the lips of others, just as we are called to do so today.
“Rejoice in the Lord always! Again, I will say it; rejoice. Be anxious for nothing. But in all things by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God; and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:6-7).
Paul’s message is a message for us and for our times. It is the theme of this year’s retreat season: “Be not anxious! Living in the Peace of Christ.”

(2016 - 2017) COLUMBAN YEAR DOUBLE STAR COUNCIL WINNER - GG COUNCIL 4581
Star Council Award
The Star Council Award recognizes outstanding achievement in membership, insurance and service program activities. To be eligible to earn the Star Council Award, a council must qualify for the Father McGivney, Founder's, and Columbian awards.
Double Star Council - The Double Star Council Award is given to those councils that achieve Star Council while doubling the council new membership quota. Garden Grove Council 4581 hit 200% of the recruiting goal. Less than 4% of the over 16,000 councils world-wide earn Star Council.
In 1882, our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, saw that the needs of his parishioners were too great for him to meet by himself. That is why he brought a handful of parish leaders together to address the urgent needs of his parishioners. The challenges faced by people in 1882 are primarily the same as those that people still face today. People continue to need food, shelter and clothing. Your council is called to live the vision of our founder and to help provide for the needs of your parish and programs and activities in the categories of Church, community, council, family, culture of life and youth are providing meaningful help to people and families.
This is why the Supreme Council celebrates the achievements of councils each year by awarding the Star Council Award.
