Knights of Columbus Facts:
The Founder of the Knights of Columbus
Fr. Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 in New Haven Connecticut. He founded the order to assist the Catholic men and their families in time when discrimination against Catholics was very prevalent. The Order has grown to over 1.7 million members and Fr. McGivney is being considered for sainthood by the Pope. The Order has four fundamental principles:
charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism
All the members of the Knights of Columbus belong to a council, and any group of at least of thirty men can be assembled to form a new council in his area. The chosen officer to lead the council is the GRAND KNIGHT. He, with the other officers of the council, are chosen by the election of officers every year
The five program chairmen report of the activities of the church, community, council, family and youth. The five chairmen report to Program Director, who alternatively reports to the grand knight. A group of several councils within the same geographic area are a district. The direction of the district is led by the district deputy and his assistant[s], the district warden[s]. Some districts can gain two or more wardens if the district grows exponentially. At this moment, nearly 129 councils are organized in 27 districts in the state of Maryland. The state deputy appoints the district officers. The State Council presides over the districts. The officers of the state council and the state program chairmen are similar to those in the council level and coordinate the activities of all the councils throughout state. Each year, the state deputy goes to the state council convention to appoint officials and to direct the other business of the state council. Each grand knight and a chosen delegate represents each council in the state council convention. The highest level within the Knight of Columbus is the Supreme Council, directed by the supreme knight. The supreme convention is every summer. State deputies from every state, territory and nation which the Knights of Columbus are active meet to direct the business referring to the international operation of the order.
