ST. BARBARA KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS #11736 FRATERNAL YEAR 2017 - 2018 SUMMARY
The Knights fraternal year runs from July 1 to June 30. The following is a brief summary of our donations, programs and activities that we have sponsored in the 2017-2018 fraternal year.
This year we donated $1760 for our Coats for Kids Program, this bought 8 cases of brand new coats, (96 coats). We also applied to Knights of Columbus Supreme for their Black Friday Program. We qualified for another 8 cases of coats, for a total of 192 coats which were then donated to needy kids in our community. We work together with Plateau Outreach Ministries to help implement this program. POM gets the word out to the community and finds the families that are in need for these coats. The Knights, together with Fr. Dave spend an evening or two helping the kids find just the right coat for them. Our Tootsie Roll Program raised $3,511.43. This money went to 3 charities that work with the disabled. Donations were made to Special Olympics, Northwest Center and Arc of King County. Our Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP) assists seminarians with their journey to the priesthood. The seminarian we are supporting now is Deacon Carlos Orozco. Deacon Carlos is in his final year at Mundelein Seminery, he was ordained as a Deacon this past summer. The Knights were able to give Deacon Carlos a monetary donation of $1400. We then received another $200 from Supreme and were able to give that to Deacon Carlos, as well. We also had two of our Knights attend his ordination and presented him with a $100 Visa gift card. The Food for Families Program is a year round program where parishioners donate food to the Black Diamond Food Bank. Every week the Knights weigh the food and take it to the food bank. Part of this program is our very successful 40 Cans for Lent Program where parishioners bring in one can of food for every day in Lent. This past year we collected 7617 pounds of food. We were also able to make a $500 cash donation to the food bank thanks again to Supreme who gave us $100 for every 1000 pounds of food up to $500. The Knights also support the Pennies for Heaven program and make an annual contribution. This year we donated $204.40 to Pennies for Heaven. The St. Barbara Knights of Columbus Scholarship Program gave out two $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors from our parish. This past year we were able to make a $5000 donation to St. Barbara Parish to help with projects around the church. We were also able to donate $300 to our Brother in Need Program. During the Christmas season we bought two cases of “Keep Christ in Christmas” Christmas cards and donated them to our parishioners, many gave a free will offering for these cards. We had several boxes of cards left over which we donated to POM to donate to members in the community. During the year we sponsor 3 Blood Drives. Bloodworks Northwest schedules our blood drives and the Knights are responsible for getting donors scheduled. This year St. Barbara parishioners donated just under 60 units of blood, this meant we were able to help 165 patients needing blood. For Mothers Day, we purchased carnations and handed them out to the ladies of our parish. For Fr. Dave’s 40th anniversary in the priesthood, we gave him $450 to use for a vacation. Fr. Dave just spent a few days in Victoria, BC with a good friend of his. For Easter, we purchase several hundred Easter eggs and have an Easter egg hunt for children on the church grounds. We also participated in the Knights “Building a Domestic Church” program. We purchased booklets that are available in the entry of the church. These booklets were so popular that we made a second purchase.
The St. Barbara Knights also sponsored many events throughout the year. Our picnic/car show continues to be a very popular event in the middle of August. In October we help out The Circle of Joy with setting up the hall for their annual bazaar. On the day of the bazaar we help the vendors unload their vehicles and bring their items into the hall. We also help the vendors at the end of the day. This is vey much appreciated by the vendors. During the Christmas party, we took photos of kids, young and old, with St. Nickolas. We also volunteer to take photos for 1st Communion. In April, we volunteer as servers for the annual Circle of Joy tea. Every year we sponsor several “Garden Parties” where we clean up the church grounds. In July, we get together with the St. John’s Knights and sponsor a day at Cheney stadium for a Rainiers baseball game. This year we had over 80 people from both parishes attend. On the 4th Sunday of every month, we lead the rosary between the 8am mass and the 10am mass. Our 4th degree Knights also provide the Color Corps for the Confirmation mass as well as for funerals of Knights who have passed away. The Color Corps is also an integral part of the Memorial Day mass at St. Patrick’s cemetery in Kent. The Color Corps also marched in the Enumclaw 4th of July parade. Every year we have 4 pancake breakfasts. These breakfasts are very popular among the parishioners. Donations from these breakfasts go to our Coats for Kids Program, RSVP, Scholarship fund and to support the church. In the early spring, we have our popular dinner/auction. This dinner has helped us the last few years in being able to make the large donations to our church.
