I am pleased to announce that the Knight of the Month for August is Kevin Konouck. Kevin’s devotion to the Catholic Church and local Catholic schools is self-evident by his undying commitment to his craft as a Bingo Caller. He is smooth, calm, and expeditious as a caller and rarely misses a beat during rather hectic bingo operations. His involvement as a member of the Board of Directors for the 5480 Club has been crucial as the Club and Council/Assembly go through the new Home Council/Club agreement requested by Supreme. Many times we have very active members who do not attend meetings, but contribute greatly to the Church, Council, and Community. The January 2018 Knight of the Month is cut from this cloth. He is a member of Saint Jerome Catholic Church and volunteers as an usher for the noon Mass. He is a regular volunteer at Monday night BINGO where he works the “Lucky 7” machine. He is married with two sons and four grandchildren. When I approached him to lean details for this article, he deferred to the Brother Knight who recruited him and to the Brother Knights who help him at BINGO, humbly acknowledging that we all have to help if we are to achieve greatness. Please take an opportunity to say thank you and congratulations to our January Knight of the Month, Issam “Sam” Abi-Saab.

The August 2017 Knight of the Month is a group of Knights, that without them, our Council could not continue in its current form. Choosing one Knight would leave out many that I am truly thankful for their time on Monday and Thursday. They tirelessly tend to many activities on these two nights. You can find them at the Bingo Hall early in the afternoon setting up and staying until after the last ball has been called making our fundraiser successful in many ways. I cannot be prouder of their efforts. Please find some time to join them to help ease their load. Congratulations to the Monday and Thursday Bingo workers on the Knight of the Month award for August.
The July 2017 Knight of the Month is a long time member, but a new volunteer to Bingo. When he heard the call, he responded in a big way. On top of volunteering with Boy Scouts, Parish Council, and Swim Teams, John Nelson has also volunteered to be a Bingo Caller on Mondays. Please take an opportunity to say thank you and congratulations to our July Knight of the Month, John Nelson.
This month’s Knight of the Month volunteers all over the council. You are likely to see him at Bingo working the floor, at various events providing sound services, or even working as the DJ. He does not just volunteer at the council, but he also volunteers at the Spanish Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Additionally, he serves the state council as the New Council Development Chairman. Please join me in congratulating our June Knight of the Month, SK Thai Nguyen.
One of the hardest decisions most every month is who to select as the Knight of the Month. The brothers of this council do so much and are always willing to help, so it often makes it hard to identify that one brother of the month. Not so this month, as this brother always excels to support our efforts, often working bingo and helping with the QA effort. He lobbies passionately to obtain additional volunteers for our Bingo, for SPRED, not only at OLMC, but all over. He also brought an idea forward to create Rosary cards to send to people as we say the rosary for them before meetings. I have taken his idea and worked with him, and I expect to have a printed product by the end of May for distribution in the council hall. Please join me in congratulating our May Knight of the Month - Sir Knight Clement Danish.
The Knight of the Month for April is no longer a member of our council, however this Sir Knight is always willing to serve, Immaculate Conception Church, our Council, his Council and the Assembly. He regularly attends our council meetings, serves faithfully at Bingo, and often tends bar for events. I have had many long conversations with him and he always provides a willing sounding board and good advice and observations. We are truly blessed to call this man a brother Knight. Please join me in congratulating our April Knight of the Month, SK Rick Schirm.
This Brother Knight has not been with the council very long, but in that time he has jumped in to Help numerous council Events and programs. He is an active Bingo volunteer, serves as a Cub Scout Leader at OLMC, and volunteers often for Adopt-a-Spot. He is always willing to lend a hand with a smile. Please find Steve Chipman at an event and thank him for his commitment to the council and congratulate him as our March Knight of the Month.
Once again, SK Carroll organized bus transportation, parking, and dinner for 41 people that atended the March for Life in Washington, D.C. I am sure you see all the great things that Carroll does for the Council and Assembly. He is always willing to contribute wherever there is a need, in as big or as small a capacity as needed. He serves the Council as Advocate and the Assembly as Color Corps Commander. Carroll also serves St. Jerome Parish in many ways, and I am sure he does so with the same tireless energy he brings to council events. Please join me in congratulating our February Knight of the Month Sir Knight Carroll Kelley.
As many of you know, Alberto took over the Janitorial contract last year. Due to his efforts, you can see a marked improvement in the state of the hall. He ensures that the building is prepared for the various events we hold, and often does many extra tasks to help the 5480 Club maintain the building. Even though some tasks are outside his responsibilities, he never asks for anything in return. Alberto also serves as assistant Lounge manager, helping Lew provide great Friday night events. You almost always see him volunteering at Bingo as well. Please take an opportunity to say thank you and congratulations to our January Knight of the Month, SK Alberto Rios.

You do not have to look very long to see this Brother Knight volunteering his time and talents for our council. He has taken up the role of QA lead and still serves as Warden as well as many other events. Whenever he can he comes to the aid of his brothers. Please take a moment this month to congratulate Dean Jernigan, our October Knight of the Month.
Sir Knight David Litzinger, PGK. The Knight of the month for September works behind the scenes and out in front to ensure the council runs smoothly. As trustee, he ensures that we are financially sound, but also gives me advice and the benefit of his experience. He is always one of the first to respond to email requests for information or advice. Even though his wife Mary is ill, he still finds time to serve at the parish and the council; in addition to his trustee role, he also serves as the church director for OLMC. He is also very involved in the church ministry to those with special needs. This ministry is close to my own heart as my sister Elizabeth has benefited greatly from t. Take a minute to thank our September Knight of the Month David Litzinger for all he does for our council, his parish and our community.
Our August Knight of the Month is someone who you don’t see at every meeting. However he is probably at the hall more hours than most. Jim has been the Bingo Manager for many years. He works bingo nights and also weekends to ensure we meet all bingo reporting requirements. Recently with bingo proceeds down, several members met to discuss how to revitalize our bingo games and boost attendance. Quickly the new games were developed and new flyers printed. All done in about a month. The new games have been well received and profits are up. In addition to all his work for bingo, Jim is a catechist for RCIA and a Eucharistic Minister at the 10AM Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Jim was also previously on the parish council of OLMC. Please thank Brother Jim Hooker, our August Knight of the Month.
Our Knight of the Month for July has been a mentor to me since my first few days in the order. He has offered me the benefit of his experience whenever I had a question. I have served on the degree team with him for a couple years now, and have benefited by his example. He is always volunteering for Bingo, and anywhere he is asked. I have never been refused when asking for assistance or advice. I would like to thank the July Knight of the Month Sir Knight Chuck Olson.
Our Knight of the Month for June is very active with Bingo and is truly a mainstay to keep Bingo flying. He is a caller and also a member of the committee trying to find ways to improve our Bingo games to help this Council. April’s Knight of the Month has been a stalwart volunteer in support of the Council’s bingo operations for many, many years. He is not only in charge of the counter operations, but he also sells instant cards on the floor when the need arises. He does this religiously, despite lower back and knee pains. Even though he does not like change, he enthusiastically championed the instant game changes that needed to be made for more money to be brought in for Charity. Through his efforts, the bingo operations will be able to provide more financial assistance to other charitable organizations. This Brother has shown a keen interest in the workings of our Council in his attendance at Council meetings and 5480 Club meetings. Please help me congratulate Brother Jeff James as our Knight of the Month.
The Knight of the Month for March is an avid bingo worker that very few people get to see. But the work that he does is still very important to the overall success of bingo. He shows up on a regular basis and counts the instant tickets in the back room. He always has a good word to say to whoever is in his presence. The amazing aspect about him, is how he squats to smoke outside of the lounge. He has a wealth of military knowledge to share along his knowledge of how a working farm actually operates. I think our Council is truly blessed to have Brother Jerry Vorwold as a member and he is our March Knight of the Month.
The Knight of the Month is being presented to a group of men, that without them, our show could not continue. I tried to choose one, but that would have many out that I am truly thankful for their time on Monday and Thursday. They tirelessly tend to many activities on these two nights. You can find them at the Bingo Hall early in the afternoon setting up and staying until after the last has been called making our fundraiser successful in many ways. I cannot be more proud of their efforts. Please find some time to join them to help ease their load. Congratulations to the Monday and Thursday Bingo workers on the Knight of the Month award for February.

Brother Bernie and June Gerlach
On bingo nights or Friday evenings there are often many of our Brother Knights in the hall serving in many different ways to keep our mission of charity moving. If you come to the council home other times, you are likely to find a much smaller number. Bernie and June Gerlach can often be found in the hall early in the morning meeting maintenance people, taking table linens home and washing them for the next rental, helping to decorate or cook for an event. Their dedication to serving this Council and many other organizations is an example for us all. I am happy to name Bernie and June Gerlach our April Family of the Month.

Brother Tony and Crystal Rivera-Silva
On January 27, 2017 marked the 44th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. This event was a powerful example of what can be done with a peaceful protest. Many young and old people marched to show that we must protect the most vulnerable of us all. A great example of this commitment to life could be seen by Brother Knight Tony Rivera-Silva, his wife Crystal, and their three children all marching together. This was certainly a long day for the little ones leaving first thing in the morning and not getting home until well after 9 PM, but they were all smiling every time I saw them that day. Please take a minute to thank Brother Tony and Crystal for their example and congratulate them as our February Family of the Month.
Sir Knight Stephen and Donna Raschke
Steve serves both the Council and Assembly locally, but also serves the State Council of Virginia. Even though he is the Immediate Past State Deputy, he and Donna still find time to attend Council events and often can be found both before and after events helping out where ever they are needed – managing to contribute time even though he is very busy as the Faithful Navigator of Assembly 2430. Brother Tony and Terri Merendino
Brothers, I am sure you all know how much time PGK Tony puts into our Council. He is always at council meetings and volunteering at bingo. He and Terri support almost every event from Fridays in the lounge to the many fund raising dinners. Either attending or volunteering, they always show their support. This is not however why I thought of them as Family of the Month for November. I had the great opportunity to share a long conversation with both of them this past month at the Hispanic Heritage dinner and I learned that they had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. This fact struck me deeply, to see their example of Christian Marriage, in this time when there are so many challenges to the sanctity of marriage, out of control divorce rates, and same-sex marriages. I felt we should all take a moment to celebrate this example in our midst of the love and faith shown by the Merendino Family. Please join me in congratulating our November family of the month, Tony and Terri Merendino.
SK Wilfred and Herma Wotke
Wilfred has served the council as recorder for two years. He and his wife Erma volunteer for many events throughout the year. You can find them supporting any Council event either by just attending or volunteering their time. Walt can be seen at Council meetings as one of our worthy guards, which he has done for a few years. Debbie is an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America. They help support their parish of St Jerome, but I am most proud of their support of Council 5480. Please help me congratulate Walter and Debbie Troyan as our Family of the Month.
Brother Reco Cotton and Susanna Catalano
The Family of the Month is a truly wonderful couple. The events that they attend are heightened with enjoyment when they show up. Reco helps count money during bingo nights, is a guard at our meetings and also DJ’s when he is asked (and sometimes even volunteers). Susanna plays bingo and makes many wonderful decorations for our events. When the two of them are together, and also in the presence of their children, everyone around them has a smile. Neither one of them has a negative to say about anything when they help carry a conversation. It is truly a pleasure of mine to name Reco Cotton and Susanna Catalano as our Family of the Month
Brother Larry and Mary Jo O'Bryan
New Year’s Eve was a big celebration all around the world. His wife does outstanding arts and crafts for the children events. They are a true pleasure to have as members and friends to a lot of us. Please help me congratulate Jim and Karen Kazmer as our Family of the month.
Brother Ted and Estelle Langevin
Our Family of the Month are well known around our Council for their contagious smiles and laughter with everything that they are involved with during the year. These two attend most all functions, both somber and joyful, with enthusiasm. Ted ran the award-winning Adopt-A-Spot program for many years and put our Council out there in the community. Ted and Estelle are very supportive of the Fourth Degree Assembly with their many functions also. They are truly worthy of recognition both in our Council and the whole Newport News community. Please help me congratulate Ted and Estelle as our Family of the Month for December.
Colleen Messier and Rose and Tyler Powell
They are usually seen wearing aprons hanging out in the kitchen. Every once in a while, they venture out to the main hall to receive a congratulatory applause on the meal of that event. They cover Friday nights for the Council with many, many events. You can receive a smile from them, and also how to properly run an event that is serving food. I do not know what we will do without them because of the many things they do that go unnoticed. This family is truly very good friends of mine and I hope of yours also. Please help me congratulate Colleen Messier and Rose and Tyler Powell as our Family of the Month.

Chaplain Rev. Carlos Lerma and Faithful Friar Rev. Henry Diesta.
Congratulations to “Our Fathers” in Newport News, Worthy Chaplain Rev. Carlos Lerma and Faithful Friar Henry Diesta. When Reverend Father Carlos H. Lerma was in his early 20s and looking for direction in his life, he went to his parish priest for guidance. At the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church he began helping minister to the poor in his small hometown of Buga, Colombia. After a year, he sensed that this was the life to which he was called. With the help of his pastor, Fr. Carlos immediately set in motion a path to the priesthood. It would take him 12 years to get there. Today Father Carlos is the Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He is fluent in Spanish and English and serves as Chaplain of both Council 5480 and Council 11817. Father Carlos is a regular at council functions and will always remain behind to hear a confession. We are blessed to have Father Carlos. Reverend Father Henry Diesta, a priest of the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines, was appointed Pastor of St. Jerome Church in Newport News in 2009. Father Henry was well received into the large Newport News Filipino community and quickly adopted Council 5480 as his brothers. Father Henry spent his entire five years ministering to the Sir Knights of the Rev. Michael Bader Assembly as the Faithful Friar. Father Henry will be returning to his home Diocese this summer. We will miss you.
